Sam knows exactly where she wants to spend her life Exmoor, England. Its heather-clad moors and stunningly beautiful coastline own her heart and soul. She imagines no better existence than the life she leads with Dunster—her handsome and loyal, though always hungry, Exmoor pony. Why would she ever leave?
One transatlantic relocation, two decades, and an empty nest later, Sam desperately needs an answer to that question. An unexpected request from her American husband awakens the crushing realisation she may be living the wrong life in the wrong country. Her apprehension is compounded by the discovery of an ancient Cornish word hireth. Its meaning—a deep yearning for home with a sense of loss—sends her tumbling through the longitudinal cracks of an expat life, crash-landing in national-identity-crisis territory. Second-guessing decisions made years earlier, she must determine where her heart truly resides. But will the answer force her to choose between her husband and her homeland?

Told with humour, deep reverence for England, and compassion for the human-equine bond, Dunster’s Calling speaks to world travellers and homebodies alike of the love between a girl and her pony, and a woman and the country she left behind.

A percentage of proceeds from the sale of this book to be donated to the Moorland Mousie Trust for the preservation and protection of the Exmoor pony breed.

An utterly charming novel. As a dual British-American citizen myself, I found this a treat to read.

I'm not sure if I've been to Exmoor but the beautiful description has it firmly on my must-visit list now! Most of the action follows young Sam and her passion for equines; I never owned a pony but I remember the yearning and the gentle envy of friends who did. As such, some of Sam and Polly's exploits certainly called to mind my own. Told with two timelines, don't expect the present-day story to move forward much in time; this tale is really about Sam's exuberant youth and the irrefutable pull back to her roots.

Once the author settled in and found her voice I found the writing smooth and entertaining. I loved the range of characters, and details (like Sam's mother's hair reflecting the state of the family's finances) were cleverly woven. A few unfortunate typos have crept into the book and my Kindle did encounter some formatting glitches, but I strongly encourage you to look past these. (UPDATE: the author let me know these have been identified and corrected). You'll be rewarded with a delightful and moving novel.

Perfect for Anglophiles, horse-lovers or anyone who wonders if their life has played out the way it should.

Dunster Calling What a heart to do when family and home are continents apart? edition by Tracey Gemmell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Dunster's Calling is a delightful reflection on the meaning of "home", told with great humor and deep reverence for Exmoor, England, which has now been added to my someday travel dreams. I was impressed with the deft and confident writing from the first-time author and very much look forward to Tracey Gemmell's next work.
I would read this book again just for pure enjoyment! It's such a heartfelt story that makes me really appreciate all my wonderful, worldly and dear friends that I spent time with in the USA while they were living abroad and understand why many returned to their homeland. I especially enjoyed the authors writing style, sense of humor and the backstory is just so childlike realism. Moreover, this book has piqued my interest, big time, for a visit to Exmoor one day...its been added to my bucket list!
Hireth! Now I know the word for my own personal longing! Totally enjoyed this book, Dunster's Calling. As an American who had the incredibly good fortune to ride horses in Exmoor National Park in the 1970's I have treasured my Exmoor and Porlock Village memories and over the years have returned a few times in an attempt to recapture the magic. Tracey Gemmell brought me back one more time.
Reading Tracey's story touched me on a very personal level. The main character in the book, Sam, and I both have had big dreams to return to a special passion, place and time in our lives. Who knew it would take so many years for it to be the "right" time for dreams to come true!
Dunster's Calling is an easy read. Characters are believable. Setting is magical. Highly recommended for girls with dreams! 5 stars
I received an advanced copy of this book in return for an unbiased review. Loved this book. The author insightfully articulates the path that takes us from childhood dreams to adult reality. A keen sense of humor keeps this intimate journey feeling like an adventure we want to join. Will life's great adventures take us where we need to be? Even though I've lived my life on only one continent, the book resonated deeply. Seriously. Loved. This. Book.
This is a wonderful book! My favorite part is when Sam is reliving her childhood in Exmoor, England. The descriptions are so well done, I feel like I could go Exmoor and I would know every bridle path, every view, every cottage, like I have been there before. Who would not love Dunster? Reading the book I can practically feel his warm, shaggy coat as I hug him. It's almost a rude awakening to put the book down and find I'm not in Exmoor! I know this is a great book because after I finished it, I kept thinking about Dunster, Exmoor, and Sam. With most books, I enjoy them but once I finish it, I'm on to the next. I think I need to go to Exmoor now myself, Dunster's Calling!
I fell in love with the countryside, if not the weather, and thoroughly enjoyed the entire journey. I loved Exmoor, the place and the ponies, and especially loved meeting that very special Exmoor pony with the fluid eyes and long lashes. He captured my heart with his wisdom and unique ability to share it, and with his unconditional love for the little girl that needed some looking after. Like her, my life, too, will be forever changed for knowing him. I have no equestrian knowledge and yet at sixty-six years of age I find myself wanting to hug a pony.
I also have no knowledge of hierth, a painful longing for home. Never even heard the word before. And nothing in my experience has given me a reason to have such knowledge. Oh, sure, I miss the ocean and the islands if I've stayed away too long, but that's not the same thing. My 'roots' have never been displaced, and yet I felt the young woman's torment as if it were my own.
It is a remarkable writer that can take you on a journey that allows you to feel something beyond the scope of your own experience and leave you changed because of it. Tracey Gemmell is that writer, and Dunster's Calling is that book.
I decided to save this book until I was sat at the airport heading to England to see my family. Read it all the way there, I couldn't put it down. Being an expat it pulled at my heart strings. Torn between your childhood and your life in the US can sometimes be a difficult place to be. I loved the humour and could put myself in Sam's place many times whilst growing up. I learned the meaning of "Hireth", which I'd never heard before. I now carry it in my mind. I loaned my book to my sister and she loved it too. I will definitely read it again. Highly recommend you read it. Anyone who has moved far away from where they spent their childhood can relate to Dunster's Calling.
